A Living Tradition

Chidaoba is more than just a sport – it’s a living tradition. What sets it apart is its unique blend of physical skill, ritual, music, and cultural symbolism. Unlike other wrestling styles, Chidaoba is performed in traditional costume, accompanied by music, and deeply rooted in centuries-old Georgian heritage.

Preserving Georgian Culture

IFGW preserves and promotes Georgian culture by bringing Chidaoba to the world stage. We organise traditional-style tournaments, support youth training in authentic techniques, and collaborate with cultural institutions to maintain historical practices, music, and dress. By integrating Chidaoba into international events and educational programs, we ensure that this unique part of Georgia’s heritage continues to live, grow, and inspire future generations—both in Georgia and abroad.

Benefits of Learning Chidaoba

Chidaoba offers much more than physical strength. By practicing Chidaoba, individuals develop: Discipline and focus through traditional training; Strength, agility, and balance in a unique combat style; Respect and sportsmanship, core values of Georgian culture; Cultural identity by connecting to centuries-old heritage; A sense of community and belonging in and beyond the sport. Chidaoba shapes both body and character — honouring the past while empowering the present.

Village Festival Match

One of the most iconic traditions of Chidaoba is the village festival match. For centuries, Georgian villages would gather in open fields after harvest season, where the best local wrestlers competed — not for medals, but for honour, pride, and the joy of their community. Wrestlers wore traditional chokha coats and were accompanied by live music played on the doli (drum), turning the match into a festive ritual. The crowd didn’t cheer for violence, but for grace, technique, and respect. A good loss, taken with dignity, was often more admired than a proud win.
