Message from the President
My decision to assume the role of President at the International Federation of Georgian Wrestling (IFGW) was born out of a deep respect for our heritage and a lifelong commitment to preserving and elevating Georgian culture on the world stage. Chidaoba, our traditional form of wrestling, is more than a sport—it is a living testament to the Georgian spirit, values, and identity.
I was inspired by the need to safeguard this tradition not only as a cultural treasure, but also to ensure its continued relevance for future generations. The opportunity to lead an organization dedicated to the global promotion of Chidaoba—and to steer it toward potential Olympic recognition—was both a great honour and a personal calling.
It is my belief that when we honour our past, we build a stronger foundation for the future. The IFGW embodies this principle, and I am proud to contribute my efforts to this noble mission.
Leading the Future of Chidaoba
One of the most significant initiatives I am dedicated to is the 8-Year Strategic Development Plan (2025–2032), which aims to establish a robust foundation for the advancement of Chidaoba both within Georgia and on the global stage. This comprehensive plan is anchored in a profound respect for our traditions while maintaining a forward-looking vision for international engagement.
Key projects under this initiative include:
- International Recognition and Olympic Pathway: A detailed feasibility study is being conducted to facilitate the eventual recognition of Chidaoba as an Olympic discipline.
- Cultural Preservation and Digital Archiving: The development of an extensive digital archive encompassing the history, techniques, attire, and traditions of Chidaoba is underway to ensure the preservation of this cultural heritage.
- Global Partnerships and Training Centers: The International Federation of Georgian Wrestling (IFGW) is focused on establishing strategic partnerships in countries such as Italy, France, the USA, Japan, and Greece, with the objective of creating training centers and fostering cultural exchange through Chidaoba.
- Youth Engagement and Educational Integration: Recognizing the importance of engaging the younger generation, plans are in place to incorporate Chidaoba into educational curricula and local sports initiatives both within Georgia and internationally.
- Annual Chidaoba World Festival: An annual flagship event will be hosted in Georgia, celebrating the sport and its associated music, rituals, and philosophical essence.
Each of these projects exemplifies our unwavering commitment to harmonizing tradition with strategic development. It is a privilege to lead IFGW during this pivotal period of growth and transformation.
The Essence of Georgian Wrestling
Georgian wrestling—Chidaoba—is not merely a sport. It is a living tradition, a reflection of the Georgian soul shaped by centuries of culture, courage, and community. What makes it so special is its unique combination of physical mastery, ethical values, and artistic expression.
Chidaoba is deeply rooted in our national history. It began as a method of warrior training, but over time, it evolved into a ceremonial contest of honour. Each match is accompanied by traditional music, symbolic attire, and a code of conduct that emphasizes respect, dignity, and strength—not just of body, but of character.
What sets Chidaoba apart is its integration of culture and sport. It teaches discipline and humility while celebrating individuality and national pride. It carries with it the rhythm of Georgian polyphony, the poise of our dance, and the moral compass of our ancestral values.
In a world increasingly distanced from its roots, Chidaoba reminds us that tradition and progress can go hand in hand. Sharing it with the world is not only a matter of cultural pride—it is a contribution to the global tapestry of intangible heritage.
